Behind Every Match, a Road: Public Works and the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has ended, and the images that will stay with us are the ones from inside the stadiums. The work that made those moments possible happened somewhere else entirely. It happened on the streets, corridors, and interchanges that moved millions of people to and from the venues, on schedules measured in minutes, under a level of demand most road networks will never see again.

That work belongs to Public Works.

The Largest Tournament the Sport has Ever Staged

This was the biggest World Cup in the event’s history. FIFA expanded the field to 48 teams and 104 matches, and for the first time three nations shared hosting duties across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Each stadium absorbed a surge of visitors, media, and match-day traffic over a compressed window.

Stadiums get the spotlight, but a host city runs on everything around them. Fans arrive by car, transit, rideshare, and foot. Freight gets rerouted. Emergency vehicles need clear access. Transit corridors carry loads far above their daily norm. All of it depends on the physical network underneath, and most of that network is pavement.

The Roads Were Already Carrying a Load

Here is the part most fans never think about. The roads asked to perform under World Cup pressure were, in many cities, already under strain before the first match.

The American Society of Civil Engineers graded the nation’s roads a D+ in its 2025 Infrastructure Report Card, part of a broader multitrillion-dollar gap between what U.S. infrastructure needs and what is currently funded. That gap is not abstract. Rough pavement raises costs for the people who drive on it every day. TRIP, a national transportation research nonprofit, has estimated that driving on roads in poor condition costs motorists hundreds of dollars a year in additional vehicle operating expenses.

Historically, knowing a network’s condition meant slow, manual field surveys that captured a snapshot and quickly went stale. That model does not match the pace of a city preparing for millions of visitors.
